Terumo Aortic today announced that it has received the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category for its global custom solutions programme. This is the company’s first King’s Award for Enterprise, having previously been the recipient of eight Queen’s Awards.

The company’s custom solutions programme (subject to local regulatory approval) is a collaborative process enabling the creation of unique custom solutions for treating complex aortic disease in patients for whom no viable off-the-shelf product is commercially available. This programme is designed specifically for dedicated custom device engineers and clinical case planners to work closely with clinicians and clinical specialists on a case-by-case basis to deliver an optimal product solution for the treatment of individual patient anatomy.

Terumo Aortic notes in a press release that one recent advancement revolutionising the custom programme is the evolution of a digital, cloud-based system to manage all custom product requests for patients. In addition to managing the details for each case and the uploading of computed tomography (CT) scans by clinicians, the system enables the creation of a 3D-printed anatomical model of the patient’s anatomy allowing the clinician to perform hands-on practice deployments to evaluate the functionality and fit of the product prior to the actual procedure.

This digital multidisciplinary approach combining clinical and technical experience ensures that all aspects of the patient’s condition and medical history, unique requirements (especially if complex aortic pathology) and functional limitations are considered throughout the process.

Commenting on this success, Erik Pomp, president and chief executive officer of Terumo Aortic, said: ‘We are honoured to have been recognised with this highly prestigious award for our global custom solutions programme. The digital capabilities have significantly elevated the level of service provided to clinicians completely transforming the way the team works to deliver custom solutions more efficiently, forging closer working relationships with customers and establishing a treatment plan for the individual patient.”

The press release details that the King’s Awards for Enterprise represent the highest honour for businesses and individuals in the UK and recognise outstanding achievements by UK businesses in the fields of innovation, international trade and sustainable development.
