“Vascular surgeons don’t get burned out from doing vascular surgery, they get burned out from doing all the things that are unrelated to vascular surgery.” So says Malachi G Sheahan III (Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, USA) in this wide-ranging interview with Vascular News at the 2026 Vascular Annual Meeting (10–13 June, Boston, USA). Beginning with a sweeping history of burnout in vascular surgery, Sheahan highlights some recent research on the topic—presented at VAM 2026—and considers how to address what the data show to be a “modifiable”, albeit persistent, issue.
