Ulf Teichgräber (Jena, Germany) talks to Vascular News at the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) 2022 annual meeting (10–14 September, Barcelona, Spain), about some of the key five-year results from the EffPac randomised controlled trial, which compared the Luminor drug-coated balloon (DCB; iVascular) with plain old balloon angioplasty (POBA).
The Luminor DCB showed statistically significant superior primary patency (61.4%) compared to POBA (53.5%) at five years, and a freedom from target lesion revascularisation of 82.1%. These “astonishing results” also showed no difference between the two groups in terms of clinical improvement and all-cause mortality.
Teichgräber states that EffPac “is the first trial that is really presenting five-year data per protocol and not as ad hoc analysis”. He concludes by discussing that not all DCBs are the same and the importance of coating technology to be able to get as much paclitaxel on to the vessel wall as possible without any safety issues.
