On 25 April, Covidien, launched the RapidCross balloon, a rapid exchange balloon designed exclusively for below-the-knee interventions.

Unlike some competitive products, the new RapidCross balloon is not a coronary device retrofitted for use below the knee. Every detail – including the low profile tip, the robust exchange port and the long catheter length – was designed for below-the-knee use. The RapidCross balloon complements Covidien’s NanoCross over-the-wire balloon line for below-the knee solutions.

“The RapidCross balloon helps reduce procedure time with the convenience of rapid exchange. Even more important is the length of the balloon’s exchange port, which allows you to access taller patients and go deeper into the arch,” said Mahir Elder, interventional cardiologist at Heart and Vascular Institute in Dearborn, Michigan. “With the extended shaft length, long exchange port and excellent pushability, this is the best exchange below-the knee balloon I have used.”

The balloon delivers smooth crossing, with its proprietary lubricious coating, and two-to-three-times faster deflation than competitive products, for increased efficiency. To address the common problem of kinking in below-the knee lesions, Covidien designed this balloon with a unique in-line RX port for optimal kink resistance. It is the only below-the knee balloon that has 170 cm working length on a tapered balloon, offering improved distal access.

“The RapidCross balloon was explicitly designed to meet the unique needs of below-the-knee interventions, supporting Covidien’s commitment to delivering meaningful innovation,” said Mark Turco, chief medical officer, Vascular Therapies, Covidien. “This balloon enables physicians to treat more challenging below-the-knee lesions with increased confidence, convenience and efficiency.”
