Matteo Tozzi (Varese, Italy) speaks to Vascular News at the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) 2022 annual meeting (10–14 September, Barcelona, Spain) about new analysis looking at the washout of paclitaxel from drug-coated balloons (DCBs).
Such an analysis is crucial “because not all DCBs are similar,” says Tozzi, adding that “it is very important to see the amount of drug lost during the navigation and in the blood of the patients”.
Tozzi began using DCBs back in 2013 with the APERTO balloon (Cardionovum), and despite some safety concerns, “never stopped using the device because the clinical result is very strong, not only in my clinical practice, but also in the published literature”.
“Safety for the patients is fundamental in medicine […] today, I do not have doubt about the safety of paclitaxel,” states Tozzi. He goes on to say that the literature also shows efficacy of paclitaxel in the treatment of neointimal hyperplasia and other stenoses, for example in peripheral or coronary arteries.
Tozzi concludes by outlining whether or not a similar analysis could be performed in other anatomical areas and explains the differences in drug dosage and choice of balloon depending on treatment area.
