The NHS AAA Screening Programme was created in early 2009, the aim being to reduce deaths from abdominal aortic aneurysms through early detection. It’s being phased in across English NHS hospitals to come into full effect by 2013, which, by that time, the programme aims to be able to invite all men for screening once they reach 65 years of age. Programme Director Jonothan Earnshaw explains the programme’s progress and his hopes for its future.

Jonothan Earnshaw is a consultant vascular surgeon at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and has been Honorary Secretary of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland since 2006.
