Enrico Ascher (New York, USA) interviews Mark Farber (Chapel Hill, USA) for VEITHtv at VEITHsymposium 2019 (19–23 November, New York, USA) about the differences between off-the-shelf (OTS) devices and custom manufactured devices (CMD) for complex aneurysm repair.
Farber says physicians are faced with a dilemma when choosing to use an OTS device or a CMD, since they have to weigh the long-term outcome and durability versus the short-term benefits. He adds that the decision is dependent on the anatomy of the patient and that, while there are some OTS devices that are “perfect”, CMDs can help avoid additional risks or complications.
Ascher concludes by noting that physicians should expect complications since “nothing lasts forever”, adding that, as a result, they should look to develop an “armamentarium of strategies” to address any issues.
