Vincent Jongkind (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) discusses the current guidelines on left subclavian artery (LSA) preservation, whether coverage of the LSA can result in an increase of neurological complications, and what advantages can be gained from having an off-the-shelf endovascular graft solution for zone 2.
Jongkind also takes time to explore what he considers the potential risks to be with the traditional surgical approach for LSA preservation, and the benefits of a readily available, CE mark approved endovascular solution for zone 2.
Expanding on the benefits of an off-the-shelf solution, Jongkind stated: “If you [don’t] have this off-the-shelf solution, then it would be a bit more difficult, actually, to preserve the left subclavian artery. So either you have to order a custom-made graft well in advance, which comes with extra time and extra costs. Or what you have to do is to do a two-states procedure or a bigger operation in one time.” The issue that arises with the second option was, he said, that it lengthens the time of the surgery, but also will also increase the risk of the surgery.
