Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH) has become the first European heart centre to purchase NovaSignal’s NovaGuide—a new, autonomous robotic transcranial Doppler (TCD) system for perioperative monitoring. The device was purchased by the Liverpool team as part of a strategy to reduce stroke and delirium in patients undergoing open aortic arch surgery. Mark L Field, honorary clinical professor and clinical lead for Thoracic Aortic Surgery at LHCH, shares a case in which a patient underwent total aortic arch replacement with frozen elephant trunk (FET), demonstrating how the management of cerebral protection during deep hypothermic circulatory arrest may be improved with autonomous TCD.
