Speaking to Vascular News at the 28th European Vascular Course (EVC; 9–11 March, Maastricht, The Netherlands), Kevin Mani (Uppsala, Sweden) addresses the issue of aortic infection, which he says represents a “humongous challenge for the patient, especially when it affects the paravisceral aorta”.
Mani outlines the key takeaways from a ‘Speaker’s corner’ event on aortic infection at EVC 2025, as well as lists some of the most significant unanswered questions on the topic.
“In terms of surgery, we know what we can do to repair the aorta, both with complex endo techniques as well as open surgery with debridement,” Mani shares. However, he goes on to note that “one of the key questions that is difficult to answer is how do you deal with antibiotic treatment—when can you stop? Is there a stage at which you can safely stop antibiotic treatment for patients who have had an aortic infection with synthetic graft insertion? And what is the best follow-up methodology in terms of imaging to ensure that the infection is gone?”
